Honda is integrating AI and automation into its Chinese EV production, aiming to cut floor staff by 30%. Its Guangzhou factory, built with GAC, has started producing the all-electric Ye P7 crossover, using AI-driven welding to lower costs and boost efficiency. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) now handle heavy components like battery packs, replacing human labor in key areas. While humanoid robots remain costly and inefficient, automakers like Honda, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW are exploring advanced robotics, signaling a shift in factory labor dynamics. Honda's Ye P7 is critical for its EV market presence, especially in China, the world's largest EV market. With an 89.8 kWh battery and up to 404 miles of range, it rivals models like the Dongfeng Honda S7. Meanwhile, humanoid robots, including UBTECH’s Walker S1 and Figure 02, are slowly entering auto factories, hinting at a high-tech future for manufacturing.

China has officially entered the era of commercial flying taxis, granting its first operator certificates to EHang and Heyi Aviation for autonomous passenger drone services. Their flagship aircraft, the EH216-S eVTOL, is a two-seater autonomous air taxi featuring 16 propellers for vertical takeoff and landing. It reaches 81 mph, cruises 62 mph, and flies up to 9,843 feet (3,000 m). With a 22-mile (35 km) range per charge and a 485-pound (220 kg) payload, it’s designed for short-distance tourism, with plans to expand into urban transport as China pushes its $207 billion “low-altitude economy.”

Great: China could potentially force a U.S. company operating in China to sell to Chinese investors as part of its strategic response to U.S. actions, such as the forced sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations. This mirrors the U.S. approach to “foreign adversary controlled applications,” where ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, was pressured to divest its U.S. assets due to national security concerns. China has already restricted its companies from investing in the U.S., enhancing its negotiating power in trade talks. This reciprocal strategy could be part of China’s broader efforts to protect its interests and leverage in global trade negotiations.
