You have to be a bit patient. Gold futures and spot gold are just two elements that play into GLD price, along with supply and demand of this ETN, since some traders have access to only one market, GLD cash or GLD futures on margins. I've been trading gold successfully via GLD options, and what I've observed is any discrepancy, where one is up and other down, or vice versa, isn't huge difference and moreover, is just a delay. I haven't created a table to track data over months, to see which lags the other, if even consistently. But my impression and how I trade is relying on gold futures (GC) momentum and price to eventually spill over into GLD. My trading tool projects where momentum is going, and a nearly 24-hour trading window (futures) is more reliable to projecting momentum and price than cash session. So I trade GLD options based on where GC momentum and moving price avg. is projected to go with my proprietary trading tool. So no, it's not a fake ETF. You see the same issue with UCO and other oil ETNs vs. CL oil futures, or silver securities, etc. They're not in 100% lockstep like SPX and ES futures because of different underlying securities and different trading customers who's supply and demand differences vary in very short term but not over a day or longer, allowing arbitrage.
