Investment Strategy

The investment seeks high current income consistent with preservation of capital. The fund normally invests at least 80% of its net assets (net assets plus borrowings for investment purposes) in GNMA securities. It may invest in securities issued by the U.S. government or its other agencies and instrumentalities. The fund may also invest in mortgage-backed and asset-backed securities, collateralized mortgage obligations, and commercial paper. For temporary defensive purposes during unusual market conditions, it may invest up to 100% of its assets in cash, cash equivalents or other high quality short-term investments.

Biography Steven Chan, CFA, Managing Director and Portfolio Manager, is responsible for the day-to-day co-management of the funds. His primary focus is government securities, including Treasury inflation-protected securities. Mr. Chan has been a portfolio manager with CSIM since 2007, and has held a number of positions at the firm since beginning his tenure in 1996. His previous roles include managing the Portfolio Operations and Analytics group, and working as a senior manager in Finance. Prior to joining CSIM, Mr. Chan was a manager of finance at GT Capital Management.

Biography Mr. Matsui is a Director with Deutsche Asset Management and has served as a Portfolio Manager in the Passive Asset Management business since 2016. Prior to joining the Passive Asset Management business, Mr. Matsui served as a Managing Director and Portfolio Manager for Charles Schwab Investment Management, Inc. (CSIM) where he was responsible for the day-to-day co-management of Schwab’s taxable bond funds and the Schwab Fixed-Income ETFs. Before joining CSIM in 2010, Mr. Matsui was an associate Portfolio Manager on the Beta Management team at BNY Mellon and an analyst in the portfolio analytics group at BlackRock Solutions. Mr. Matsui earned an MBA from the University of Hawaii, with an emphasis in Finance and a minor in Japanese. He is a CFA Charterholder and has earned the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) certification.

Biography Steven Hung, Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager, is responsible for the day-to-day co-management of each of the funds. His primary focus is corporate bonds. Prior to joining CSIM in 1999, Mr. Hung was an associate in Schwab’s management training program for nine months. In that role, he worked as a clerk on the Options Trading Floor of the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange.

Biography Jeffrey M. Mortimer, CFA, has been the primary portfolio manager in March 2014. Mr. Mortimer is Director of Investment Strategy for BNY Mellon Wealth Management and has been employed by The Bank of New York Mellon since June 2012. He has been employed by Dreyfus since March 2013 and manages the fund as an employee of Dreyfus. Prior to joining The Bank of New York Mellon, Mr. Mortimer was a partner at Bainco International Investors from September 2010 to May 2012. He also held various positions in financial management with Charles Schwab Investment Management from October 1997 to July 2010. Jeffrey holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, and a BS degree from Babson College. He became a CFA charterholder in 1997.

Biography Kimon heads the fixed income portfolio management team and has overall responsibility for Schwab’s taxable and municipal bond and money market funds. Prior to joining CSIM in 1997, he worked at Lehman Brothers as VP and fixed income institutional salesman. Before Lehman, he served as a Sr portfolio manager for Barclays Global Investors. He became a CFA charter holder in 1995. He received an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1985 and a BA from Claremont McKenna College in 1981.

Biography Tikofsky is a Director of Research with Luminent Capital Management which he joined in 2008, prior to that, he was Mortgage Portfolio Manager for all taxable bond funds for Charles Schwab Investment Management from 2006 to 2008.

Biography Shearer is a Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager of the Charles Schwab Investment Management. He joined the firm in February 2003 and has day-to-day responsibility for the management of the funds. Prior to joining Schwab, he worked for 16 years in portfolio management and quantitative research.
