Investment Strategy

The investment seeks long-term, tax-efficient capital appreciation. The fund normally invests at least 65% of its total assets in the equity securities (principally, common stock) of domestic issuers listed on a nationally recognized securities exchange. It may, but is not required to, invest in the securities of companies of any market capitalization and from a variety of industries included in the technology, healthcare, energy and industrials, specialty retailing, media/leisure/cable/entertainment and business and consumer services sectors.

Biography Lirola is the Portfolio Manager and Executive Vice President of the Growth Fund and the Aggressive Growth Fund. Prior to joining Needham in 1994, he worked at Smith Barney, Harris Upham & Co. (1976-1978), CS First Boston (1978-1990) and Swiss Bank Corporation (1990-1994). Lirola was an early member of CS First Boston’s M&A group (1978), recruited by Joseph Perella and Bruce Wasserstein and headed CS First Boston’s M&A healthcare group (1985-1990). At Swiss Bank Corporation, he was Head of U.S. M&A activities (1990-1994). Lirola joined Needham in 1994 and was successively a Co-Head of Health Care, Co-Head of Investment Banking and a member of its Operating Committee. Between 1996 and 1999, he was also an equity research analyst covering the health care services industry. His current duties include portfolio management-related activities, including stock selection, research, company visits and market analysis.

Biography Kloppenburg is the portfolio manager of Needham Investment Management, LLC. He began his career in 1978 at Bankers Trust Co. in their Pension Investment Department, managing equity portfolios, before moving to equity sales at Cyrus J. Lawrence in 1982. In 1985 he joined Needham & Company, Inc. where he was managing director of Institutional Sales and Investment Policy. After a seven-year career at Hambrecht & Quist, Kloppenburg rejoined Needham & Company, Inc. in April of 2001 as a managing director.

Biography Gallagher is the portfolio manager of Needham Investment Management, LLC. He began his career in corporate finance at The First Boston Corporation, then became a managing director at Blyth Eastman Paine Webber and Chase Investment Bank during the 1980s. Gallagher worked as a senior vice president in private equity finance for AON Corporation in 1993. He left briefly in 2000 to become a managing director at Gerard Klauer Mattison & Co., Inc., but rejoined Needham & Company, Inc. in February 2002.
