Investment Strategy

The investment seeks long-term growth of capital. Under normal conditions, the fund invests at least 80% of its assets (net assets plus any borrowings for investment purposes) in equity securities issued by entities in, or tied economically to, emerging markets. It may invest in securities issued by entities without regard to market capitalization, including smaller companies. These securities may be denominated in U.S. or non-U.S. currencies.

Biography Ping Wang, PhD is a Portfolio Manager & Senior Analyst on the Systematic Equity investment team. Ping joined MacKay Shields, including predecessor entities, in 2017. Previously, he spent four years as a Senior Global Portfolio Manager at Quantitative Management Associates (QMA), where he was responsible for investment strategy development, portfolio construction, and portfolio management of developed and emerging market long-only and long/short equity strategies. Ping also spent four years at TIAA-CREF Asset Management as a Portfolio Manager for the firm’s international quantitative equity strategies. He began his career as a Research Scientist at Fusion Technology Institute in 1992, where he developed large-scale computer codes for atomic physics calculations and opacity modeling. Ping received his BS in Physics from Beijing Normal University in 1982 and his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Wisconsin in 1992. He has been working in the investment industry since 1998.

Biography Andrew Ver Planck, CFA is the Lead Portfolio Manager for the Systematic Equity investment team. Andrew is responsible for leading all aspects of the team’s investment management capabilities, inclusive of research and portfolio management decision making. Andrew has significant experience in quantitative modeling, having initially developed and implemented the team’s US long/short equity and global stock selection models. His portfolio management experience has been recognized by Lipper as a recipient of the 2015 and 2016 Lipper US Alternative Active Extension Fund Award. Andrew started at MacKay Shields when the firm joined with equity specialist, Cornerstone Capital Management Holdings, in January 2018. Andrew joined Cornerstone in 2006 as a Portfolio Manager. Before joining Cornerstone, he spent three years as a Senior Quantitative Analyst at Gartmore Investment Management in London, where he was a member of the investment team responsible for long/short market-neutral hedge funds investing in Europe, Asia, and the US. In addition, he co-managed a long-only fund benchmarked to the EAFE Small Capitalization Index. Previously, Andrew was a Quantitative Investment Associate at Putnam Investments where he began his career in quantitative equity research. Andrew received his BS in Operations Research & Industrial Engineering from Cornell University and is a CFA charterholder. He has been working in the investment industry since 2000.
