Investment Strategy

The Sub-Fund aims to achieve income over an annual period together with capital growth over the long term (5 years or more). The Sub-Fund is actively managed and invests at least 70% of the portfolio in UK equities (company shares), including ordinary shares, preference shares and other equity-related securities. UK companies are defined as those that are either domiciled, incorporated or which have significant business in the UK.

Biography David Cumming joined Newton as Head of UK Equities in March 2022. David manages the BNY Mellon UK Income Fund with Tim Lucas, and heads up our UK equity investment team, working with Louise Kernohan and Georgina Cooper who run our UK Equity and Sustainable UK Opportunities strategies. David has been an active UK equity manager for more than 35 years. He was most recently Chief Investment Officer of Equities at Aviva Investors. Before that, he was Head of Equities at Standard Life Investments, and prior to that was a portfolio manager at Morgan Grenfell, Manufacturers Life and Edinburgh Fund Managers, having begun his career as an investment analyst at Royal London Mutual. He has an MA (Hons) in Economics and Accounting.

Biography Through his tenure at Newton, Jon has led both the global equity and multi-asset teams and been responsible for a number of multi-asset and global equity portfolios. As well as his extensive investment roles at the firm, he has also spent time as a member of the commercial team involved in discussing client portfolios and tailoring strategies to meet client requirements. He sits on Newton’s investment risk oversight groups. Jon joined the Newton equity income team in March 2020, and is responsible for both core and sustainable global equity income strategies. Jon joined Newton in 1995 and has a degree in natural sciences from Cambridge University.
Ilga Haubelt Investment Leader 2020 2022
Biography Ilga joined Newton in 2019 to head up the firm’s equity income team and is part of the management team for the Newton Global Equity Income strategy. Prior to joining Newton, Ilga was head of Global Equities at Deka Investments, where she oversaw a team of more than 20 portfolio managers with €15bn of assets under management. She was also the lead manager of Deka’s flagship global equity income fund. Before joining Deka Investments, Ilga was a portfolio manager and research analyst at Union Investment, where she was lead manager of a North American generalist equities fund, a REIT, and a global listed real estate equities fund. Ilga began her asset management career with Munich Ergo Asset Management (MEAG) as a real estate specialist. Ilga has a PhD in economics, as well as masters degrees in economics and Roman languages, from the University of Freiburg in Germany. Outside of work, IIga enjoys spending time with her family and friends, travelling, visiting arts exhibitions, learning to play the viola and reading.

Biography Emma Mogford joined Premier Miton in November 2020 and is manager of two Premier Miton UK equity income funds and co-manager of the Optimum Income Fund. Emma joined Premier Miton from Newton Investment Management where she was lead manager of the BNY Mellon UK Income Fund (Nov 2017-Sept 2020), as part of the Newton global income team and lead manager of the BNY Mellon Continental European Fund (Jul 2015 – Nov 2018). She was previously manager of the Neptune UK Higher Income Fund (Oct 2010 – July 2013). In 2013, Emma was the youngest manager to receive a Citywire AAA rating. Emma is a CFA charterholder.

Biography Nick Clay is an investment manager and member of the global equity team at Newton, which he joined in 2000. He graduated in 1990 with a degree in Economics and Philosophy. He joined the Sun Alliance UK Equity Team. After gaining his professional qualifications to become a member of the Institute of Investment Management and Research, Nick moved to Provident Mutual Investment Managers. He joined Newton in November 2000 as a Specialist Benchmark Manager. Prior to joining Newton, Nick acquired a range of experience as a UK equities manager at Morley Fund Management and as an analyst at Sun Alliance. Nick attended Leeds University and is an associate member of the UK Society of Investment Professionals.

Biography Chris Smith is co-manager of the Japan and Japan Value funds. He joined Polar Capital in January 2012 as a Japanese equity analyst, prior to which he Chris gained five years’ experience working in accountancy. He holds a BSc (1st Class Hons) in applied accounting and is a chartered certified accountant and a CFA charter holder.

Biography Simon joined Newton in 2001 and was responsible for research into a number of global industrial sectors before moving to portfolio management. Simon’s experience includes managing global, multi-asset, charity and UK equity portfolios. Simon is a chartered accountant (ACA) and prior to joining Newton he worked in both audit and insolvency practices at leading accountancy firms. He is a CFA charterholder, a member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (MCSI), and also holds a BA (Hons) degree in Industrial Economics from the University of Nottingham. Outside of work, Simon is a keen runner.

Biography Christopher joined Newton in 2006 from Schroder Investment Management and has over 21 years of investment experience. He is Head of the Core UK Equity Team and manages UK Equity funds for a number of major institutional clients.
