Investment Strategy

The investment seeks as high a level of current income, exempt from federal and California state income taxes, as is consistent with the preservation of capital. The fund normally invests at least 80% of its net assets, plus any borrowings for investment purposes, in municipal bonds that provide income exempt from federal and California state personal income taxes and the federal alternative minimum tax. It invests at least 80% of its net assets in municipal bonds rated, at the time of purchase, investment grade (i.e., Baa/BBB or higher) or the unrated equivalent as determined by the adviser.

Biography	Troutman is a vice president with The Dreyfus Corporation. He also serves as vice president and investment officer for other companies advised or administered by Dreyfus. Prior to joining Dreyfus in 1985, Troutman was a vice president and portfolio manager at CIGNA Corporation from 1977 to 1985. Before joining CIGNA, he was a municipal bond analyst with Dreyfus and Dean Witter Inc. Troutman began his investment career in 1970 as a fixed-income securities analyst with the Hartford Insurance Group.
