Investment Strategy

The investment objective of the Fund is to achieve long-term capital growth in the value of assets by investing in Asia and the Pacific region excluding Japan. The Fund will seek to achieve its investment objective by investing at least 70% of its total assets in equities and equity-related securities of companies incorporated in, or exercising the predominant part of their economic activity in the Asia Pacific region excluding Japan, or quoted or traded on the stock exchanges in those countries, including developed and emerging markets. For this purpose, total assets exclude cash and ancillary liquidities. For the remainder of its total assets, the Fund may invest outside the Asia Pacific region (excluding Japan) as w ell as in fixed income and cash.

SooHai joined Barings in November 2005, from Daiwa SB Investments (Singapore), where he was country specialist for Australia and Malaysia. Prior to that, he managed Thai and Malaysian equities at Singapore Telecom’s Asset Management department. SooHai graduated from Nanyang Technological University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Accountancy (First Class Hons) Degree and is a CFA charterholder.

Biography Eunice is the co-manager of various Asia ex Japan products and mandates, including Barings Asia Growth Fund, Barings Eastern Trust and Barings Korea Trust. She also works closely with SooHai Lim in spearheading research and stock selection in the Korean market and technology sector. Eunice joined Barings in June 2007 from Shinyoung Securities, Seoul, where she worked as equity analyst covering Korea. She received a BA from Yonsei University and an MIS from University of Washington. She is fluent in Korean and English.

Biography HyungJin Lee is Head of Asian Equities at Barings and takes the lead role in managing investment and research activities across the Asia ex Japan region. Jin has responsibility for managing a number of regional products and mandates, including the Baring Asia Growth Fund, the Baring Eastern Trust and the Baring Korea Trust. Jin was born in the Korean capital Seoul, but spent a large part of his youth on the west coast of the United States after his parents moved to the San Francisco Bay Area when he was a teenager. After successfully completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley, Jin moved back to Korea, where he landed a role as a sell-side analyst in Korea’s burgeoning Financial Services sector. At this point in the early 1990s, Korea was truly an emerging market with one of the world’s fastest growing economies, driven by rapid development in areas such as shipbuilding and car manufacturing – markets where Korea maintains a significant competitive advantage to this day. Things changed rapidly in the second half of the decade, however, as the Asian financial crisis swept through the region. The impact on Korea was significant as the economy sharply contracted and the Korean won weakened, with negative repercussions for both households and corporates.

Biography Wilfred Sit joined Mirae Asset Global Investments in 2007 and is now Head of Asia Pacific Investment Strategy. Mr. Sit is responsible for monitoring portfolio and macroeconomic investment strategy and for making asset allocation decisions. He also chairs the monthly investment strategy committee. Mr. Sit was previously the regional Chief Investment Officer at Mirae Asset for Asia-Pacific. Before joining Mirae Asset, Mr. Sit worked at Baring Asset Management Asia for three years. As Head of Asian Equities, he was responsible for regional investment research and strategy and managed high alpha funds. Mr. Sit was also Co-Head of the China team and managed a prominent closed-end China fund in the United States. Prior to Baring, Mr. Sit worked at Invesco Asia for 10 years where he managed their Greater China and Hong Kong equity portfolios. He also had experience managing global balanced mandates. Mr. Sit has a BBA in accounting and marketing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a CFA charter holder, is CPA qualified, and is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese.

Biography Khiem is responsible for the management of a number of specific Asian portfolios, and all Multi Asset portfolios for clients located in Asia. He was appointed to become a member fo the Strategic Policy Group, the company's global macro research and asset allocation team in 2006. Khiem was the Head of the Asia Pacific Specialist Investment Team from 1997 through 2006. Khiem joined Baring Asset Management in 1996 from Citicorp Global Asset Management in Sydney, where he was the Austrilian Chief Investment Officer, the chair of the Australian Asset Allocation Committee, and a member of the CGAM International Asset Allocation Committee. Khiem's prior experience includes seven years at Bankers Trust Australia and seven years at Equitilink Australia Ltd. Khiem received his B.A. in Economics (Hons.) from Macquarie University (Australia). He was designated an Associate Member of the Securities Institute of Australia (the Australian CFA equivalent) in 1979. Khiem is fluent in English, Vietnamese, and French.
