Investment Strategy

The investment objective of the STANLIB Africa Equity Fund is to generate capital growth over the long term, with income generation as a secondary objective, by providing investors exposure to African markets. This portfolio will invest across countries and industry sectors as well as across the range of large, mid and smaller cap shares. This portfolio does not subscribe to a particular theme or investment style. The securities normally to be included in the portfolio will be securities of companies operating in Africa (Excluding South Africa) or companies with operations predominantly in Africa (excluding South Africa), or any other form of participation in portfolios of CIS or other similar schemes as the Act may allow from time to time.

Biography John graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1984 with a BCom (Hons) in Economics. He has over 20 years’ investment industry experience, all of them with the Standard Bank Group. John was initially a money market dealer with Standard Corporate and Merchant Bank (SCMB), rising to the position of treasury manager. In 1995, John transferred to SCMB Asset Management, where he was initially responsible for the portfolio management of South African retirement funds. In 1995, he assumed accountability for SCMB Asset Management Africa Division, later to become STANLIB Africa Division, where he now has responsibility for all investment matters. He is responsible for all aspects of Portfolio Management in Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland and Lesotho. In addition, John oversees the management of STANLIB’s suite of Pan African products.

Biography Stephane Bwakira graduated in 1999 from Drexel University, USA with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Business Administration having been cited on the Dean’s List for academic excellence. He completed his MBA in 2004. He began his career as a Senior Business Consultant with American Management Systems, where he worked as an implementation manager to the City of New York. Immediately prior to joining STANLIB, Stephane worked at Investec Asset Management on the Investec Pan African Fund. Stephane’s prime responsibilities were for North and West Africa as well as the telecommunications and industrials sectors. At STANLIB, Stephane is lead portfolio manager for the Standard Africa Equity Fund and has research responsibilities for Francophone and North Africa, specializing in telecommunications and infrastructure stocks. He has focused on the analysis and management of African equities since 2004 and reports to STANLIB’s Head of Africa Desk, John Mackie. Stephane is based in Johannesburg.
