FuelCell Energy (FCEL) came out with a quarterly loss of $0.07 per share versus the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of $0.02. This compares to loss of $0.08 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.

This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of -250%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this fuel cell power plant maker would post a loss of $0.05 per share when it actually produced a loss of $0.04, delivering a surprise of 20%.

Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates just once.

FuelCell Energy, which belongs to the Zacks Alternative Energy - Other industry, posted revenues of $13.94 million for the quarter ended October 2021, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 31.50%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $17 million. The company has topped consensus revenue estimates just once over the last four quarters.

The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.

FuelCell Energy shares have lost about 47.5% since the beginning of the year versus the S&P 500's gain of 27.4%.

NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) Partners (NEP), another stock in the same industry, has yet to report results for the quarter ended December 2021.

This limited partnership for clean-energy projects is expected to post quarterly earnings of $0.45 per share in its upcoming report, which represents a year-over-year change of -47.1%. The consensus EPS estimate for the quarter has remained unchanged over the last 30 days.

NextEra Energy Partners' revenues are expected to be $350.87 million, up 65.5% from the year-ago quarter.
