Dollar Tree Inc. (NASDAQ:DLTR) , one of the leading operators of discount stores, delivered third-quarter fiscal 2017 adjusted earnings of $1.01 per share, which came ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 90 cents and surged 40.3% year-over-year.
Earnings Estimate Revision: The Zacks Consensus Estimate for fiscal 2017 has been stable in the last 30 days. If we look at Dollar Tree’s performance in the trailing four quarters (excluding the quarter under review), the company has outperformed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by an average of nearly 5%.
Revenues: Dollar Tree generated net sales of $5,316.6 million that advanced 6.3% year over year, and topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $5,282 million. Total company comparable-store sales (comps) improved 3.2% (on a constant currency basis), with comps for Dollar Tree up 5% and Family Dollar up 1.5%.
Outlook: Management now forecasts net sales for fiscal 2017 (which will contain an additional week) in the band of $22.20-$22.31 billion, compared with the old projection of $22.07-$22.28 billion. The company’s fourth quarter sales are projected in the band of $6.32-$6.43 billion. Comps for both periods are expected to increase in the low single-digit range.
Earnings per share for fiscal 2017 are now expected to be in the range of $4.64-$4.73, higher than the previously guided range of $4.44-$4.60. The updated guidance still includes a receivable impairment charge of 14 cents recorded in 2017. For the fourth quarter, the company expects earnings to lie in the range of $1.80-$1.89. Notably, the fourth quarter sales and earnings are likely to receive significant contributions from the 53rd week.
