Hartford Funds, a segment of The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE:HIG), has total assets of $91.5 billion under management (as of Jun 30, 2017). The company claims to manage more than 55 funds across a wide range of styles and asset classes.

Hartford Financial Services was founded in 1810 and is recognized as a renowned insurance company in the United States. The company believes that “human-centric investing can create solutions and advisor tools that not only strengthen bottom lines, but [also] strengthen advisor-client relationships by helping investors better realize their true life goals.”

Hartford MidCap HLS IB HBMCX seeks capital growth for the long run. HBMCX invests the majority of its assets in common stocks of mid-cap companies. These are companies whose market-cap falls within the range of the S&P MidCap 400 and Russell Midcap Indices. HBMCX may also invest up to one-fifth of its assets in securities of foreign issuers and non-dollar securities. Hartford MidCap HLS IB has returned 24.4% over the last year.

Mark Whitaker is one of the fund managers of HBMCX since 2012.

Hartford Small Company HLS Fund IA HIASX primarily invests its assets in common stocks issued by small capitalization companies. The fund may also invest almost one-fifth of its assets in securities of non-U.S. issuers. Small capitalization companies are those whose market capitalization falls within the collective range of the Russell 2000 and S&P SmallCap 600 indices. HIASX seeks appreciation of capital. Hartford Small Company HLS Fund IA has returned 24.3% in a year.

HIASX has an expense ratio of 0.76% compared with the category average of 1.33%.

Hartford Growth Opportunities R4 HGOSX seeks appreciation of capital. HGOSX maintains a diversified portfolio by investing in common stocks of a wide variety of mid and large-cap companies, which are expected to have strong growth prospects. HGOSX may also invest up to one-fourth of its assets in securities of foreign issuers and non-dollar securities. Hartford Growth Opportunities R4 has returned 28.3% in a year’s time.

As of September 2017, HGOSX held 102 issues, with 6.31% of its assets invested in Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Inc.
