Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Industrials, Technology and Basic Materials sectors led shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Financials and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.02%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.23%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.18%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 2.00% or 6.50 points to trade at 330.69 at the close. Meanwhile, Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) added 1.32% or 0.58 points to end at 44.44 and Visa Inc (NYSE:V) was up 0.63% or 0.80 points to 127.18 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which fell 1.99% or 1.36 points to trade at 66.90 at the close. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) declined 1.76% or 0.25 points to end at 13.93 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was down 1.46% or 2.72 points to 183.19.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE:VMC) which rose 7.51% to 122.20, Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) which was up 6.23% to settle at 19.44 and NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which gained 6.14% to close at 32.35.
The worst performers were Cardinal Health Inc (NYSE:CAH) which was down 21.42% to 50.80 in late trade, AmerisourceBergen (NYSE:ABC) which lost 7.39% to settle at 85.37 and Hologic Inc (NASDAQ:HOLX) which was down 6.89% to 36.91 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were VivoPower International PLC (NASDAQ:VVPR) which rose 225.19% to 4.39, Euro Tech Holdings Company Limited (NASDAQ:CLWT) which was up 155.56% to settle at 5.750 and China Recycling Energy Corp (NASDAQ:CREG) which gained 56.58% to close at 2.3800.
The worst performers were Heat Biologics Inc (NASDAQ:HTBX) which was down 48.59% to 1.275 in late trade, InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:NVIV) which lost 38.77% to settle at 8.26 and Mid-Con Energy Partners LP (NASDAQ:MCEP) which was down 28.23% to 1.78 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1771 to 1282 and 124 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1651 fell and 883 advanced, while 113 ended unchanged.
Shares in Cardinal Health Inc (NYSE:CAH) fell to 3-years lows; falling 21.42% or 13.85 to 50.80. Shares in Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 6.23% or 1.14 to 19.44. Shares in NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) rose to 3-years highs; gaining 6.14% or 1.87 to 32.35. Shares in VivoPower International PLC (NASDAQ:VVPR) rose to 52-week highs; rising 225.19% or 3.04 to 4.39. Shares in Euro Tech Holdings Company Limited (NASDAQ:CLWT) rose to 3-years highs; up 155.56% or 3.500 to 5.750.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.63% to 16.07.
Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.54% or 7.00 to $1312.60 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.79% or 0.54 to hit $68.47 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.50% or 0.37 to trade at $73.73 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.31% to 1.1988, while USD/JPY fell 0.57% to 109.21.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.33% at 92.28.
