Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Consumer Services sectors led shares higher while losses in the Financials, Basic Materials and Technology sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.27%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.07%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 1.99% or 0.92 points to trade at 47.10 at the close. Meanwhile, General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) added 1.79% or 0.32 points to end at 18.15 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 1.05% or 1.82 points to 174.96 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP), which fell 0.93% or 0.66 points to trade at 70.60 at the close. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 0.76% or 1.05 points to end at 137.29 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was down 0.73% or 0.61 points to 83.11.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cerner Corporation (NASDAQ:CERN) which rose 5.02% to 70.03, Deere & Company (NYSE:DE) which was up 4.32% to settle at 145.25 and TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which gained 4.21% to close at 34.19.
The worst performers were Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) which was down 7.22% to 13.10 in late trade, HP Inc (NYSE:HPQ) which lost 4.99% to settle at 21.34 and Viacom B Inc (NASDAQ:VIAB) which was down 2.13% to 26.68 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Jacksonville Bancorp Inc (NASDAQ:JXSB) which rose 62.54% to 51.20, Cleantech Solutions International Inc (NASDAQ:CLNT) which was up 59.55% to settle at 7.100 and Marathon Patent Group Inc (NASDAQ:MARA) which gained 53.53% to close at 2.180.
The worst performers were CHF Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:CHFS) which was down 44.80% to 4.350 in late trade, Global Brokerage Inc Class A (NASDAQ:GLBR) which lost 38.84% to settle at 0.58 and Rand Logistics Inc (NASDAQ:RLOG) which was down 37.03% to 0.3671 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1737 to 1360 and 114 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1306 rose and 1250 declined, while 127 ended unchanged.
Shares in Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) fell to 52-week lows; down 7.22% or 1.02 to 13.10. Shares in Deere & Company (NYSE:DE) rose to all time highs; gaining 4.32% or 6.02 to 145.25. Shares in Cleantech Solutions International Inc (NASDAQ:CLNT) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 59.55% or 2.650 to 7.100. Shares in Global Brokerage Inc Class A (NASDAQ:GLBR) fell to all time lows; down 38.84% or 0.37 to 0.58.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.93% to 9.82.
Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.82% or 10.47 to $1292.17 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 2.09% or 1.19 to hit $58.02 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 1.13% or 0.71 to trade at $63.28 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.72% to 1.1822, while USD/JPY fell 1.09% to 111.22.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.78% at 93.16.
