Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Healthcare and Telecoms sectors led shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.14%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.19%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.06%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (O:MSFT), which rose 2.61% or 1.38 points to trade at 54.25 at the close. Meanwhile, Visa Inc (N:V) added 1.44% or 1.11 points to end at 78.18 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (N:GS) was up 0.81% or 1.51 points to 187.01 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Apple Inc (O:AAPL), which fell 3.25% or 3.87 points to trade at 115.21 at the close. Chevron Corporation (N:CVX) declined 2.71% or 2.47 points to end at 88.77 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (N:XOM) was down 2.12% or 1.76 points to 81.22.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Laboratory Corporation of America (N:LH) which rose 5.17% to 117.74, Endo International PLC (O:ENDP) which was up 4.19% to settle at 58.97 and PayPal Holdings Inc (O:PYPL) which gained 4.14% to close at 36.44.
The worst performers were Qorvo Inc (O:QRVO) which was down 9.20% to 46.76 in late trade, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (N:CHK) which lost 8.94% to settle at 7.13 and Range Resources Corporation (N:RRC) which was down 7.34% to 29.02 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Reading International B Inc (O:RDIB) which rose 15.64% to 17.750, xG Technology Inc (O:XGTI) which was up 34.93% to settle at 0.769 and Lendingtree Inc (O:TREE) which gained 23.45% to close at 120.98.
The worst performers were Horsehead Holding Corp (O:ZINC) which was down 21.50% to 3.03 in late trade, Skystar Bio-Pharmaceutical Company (O:SKBI) which lost 20.00% to settle at 1.280 and NN Inc (O:NNBR) which was down 17.71% to 12.92 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1652 to 886 and 4 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1575 fell and 985 advanced, while 45 ended unchanged.
Shares in Range Resources Corporation (N:RRC) fell to 5-year lows; down 7.34% or 2.30 to 29.02. Shares in Microsoft Corporation (O:MSFT) rose to 5-year highs; rising 2.61% or 1.38 to 54.25. Shares in Visa Inc (N:V) rose to 52-week highs; rising 1.44% or 1.11 to 78.18. Shares in NN Inc (O:NNBR) fell to 52-week lows; down 17.71% or 2.78 to 12.92.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.81% to 15.30.
Gold for December delivery was up 0.07% or 0.80 to $1163.60 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.86% or 0.83 to hit $43.77 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 1.21% or 0.58 to trade at $47.41 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.30% to 1.1051, while USD/JPY fell 0.37% to 121.03.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.25% at 96.93.
