Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Oil & Gas and Technology sectors led shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Industrials and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.02%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.05%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.17%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 2.08% or 8.73 points to trade at 427.51 at the close. Meanwhile, Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 1.50% or 1.21 points to end at 82.02 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) was up 0.97% or 3.06 points to 319.80 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which fell 5.03% or 2.20 points to trade at 41.50 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 2.31% or 3.11 points to end at 131.73 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was down 1.93% or 0.44 points to 22.40.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Philip Morris International Inc (NYSE:PM) which rose 10.47% to 131.41, General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) which was up 9.81% to settle at 53.73 and Quest Diagnostics Incorporated (NYSE:DGX) which gained 6.85% to close at 157.47.
The worst performers were Genuine Parts Co (NYSE:GPC) which was down 20.97% to 113.11 in late trade, GE Aerospace (NYSE:GE) which lost 9.05% to settle at 176.66 and PulteGroup Inc (NYSE:PHM) which was down 7.24% to 133.81 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ensysce Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:ENSC) which rose 161.65% to 0.54, Genprex Inc (NASDAQ:GNPX) which was up 137.75% to settle at 3.59 and ENDRA Life Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:NDRA) which gained 90.22% to close at 0.42.
The worst performers were NeoConcept International Group Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:NCI) which was down 36.86% to 0.88 in late trade, JE Cleantech Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:JCSE) which lost 35.87% to settle at 1.43 and Siyata Mobile Inc (NASDAQ:SYTA) which was down 32.07% to 1.25 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1609 to 1182 and 99 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1738 fell and 1519 advanced, while 151 ended unchanged.
Shares in Philip Morris International Inc (NYSE:PM) rose to all time highs; up 10.47% or 12.45 to 131.41. Shares in Genuine Parts Co (NYSE:GPC) fell to 3-years lows; falling 20.97% or 30.01 to 113.11. Shares in General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 9.81% or 4.80 to 53.73. Shares in Quest Diagnostics Incorporated (NYSE:DGX) rose to 52-week highs; rising 6.85% or 10.10 to 157.47. Shares in Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) rose to all time highs; up 1.50% or 1.21 to 82.02.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.93% to 18.20.
Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.84% or 22.90 to $2,761.80 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 1.91% or 1.34 to hit $71.38 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 1.87% or 1.39 to trade at $75.68 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.15% to 1.08, while USD/JPY rose 0.20% to 151.13.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.07% at 103.91.
