Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.10%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.26%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.07%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 3.88% or 2.21 points to trade at 59.16 at the close. Meanwhile, Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 2.75% or 2.56 points to end at 95.81 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was up 1.87% or 2.95 points to 160.84 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V), which fell 3.51% or 7.35 points to trade at 202.00 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 1.70% or 3.60 points to end at 208.49 and Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) was down 1.69% or 0.85 points to 49.31.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which rose 11.55% to 14.29, HollyFrontier Corporation (NYSE:HFC) which was up 9.76% to settle at 28.91 and Helmerich and Payne Inc (NYSE:HP) which gained 8.82% to close at 27.26.
The worst performers were Rollins Inc (NYSE:ROL) which was down 6.00% to 37.47 in late trade, MSCI Inc (NYSE:MSCI) which lost 5.82% to settle at 412.90 and Viatris Inc (NASDAQ:VTRS) which was down 5.38% to 17.41 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Lexicon Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:LXRX) which rose 102.81% to 7.95, Datasea Inc (NASDAQ:DTSS) which was up 58.82% to settle at 3.780 and Cps Technologies (NASDAQ:CPSH) which gained 44.10% to close at 10.7500.
The worst performers were Viveve Medical Inc (NASDAQ:VIVE) which was down 20.50% to 3.1800 in late trade, Qilian International Holding Group Ltd (NASDAQ:QLI) which lost 17.14% to settle at 9.96 and Eos Energy Enterprises Inc (NASDAQ:EOSE) which was down 12.95% to 24.73 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2192 to 927 and 51 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2264 rose and 811 declined, while 45 ended unchanged.
Shares in Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) rose to all time highs; gaining 1.87% or 2.95 to 160.84. Shares in Lexicon Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:LXRX) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 102.81% or 4.03 to 7.95. Shares in Viveve Medical Inc (NASDAQ:VIVE) fell to 5-year lows; down 20.50% or 0.8200 to 3.1800. Shares in Qilian International Holding Group Ltd (NASDAQ:QLI) fell to all time lows; falling 17.14% or 2.06 to 9.96. Shares in Cps Technologies (NASDAQ:CPSH) rose to all time highs; up 44.10% or 3.2900 to 10.7500.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.42% to 22.97.
Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.53% or 9.90 to $1845.00 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.40% or 0.74 to hit $53.65 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.59% or 0.33 to trade at $56.39 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 1.2157, while USD/JPY fell 0.07% to 103.78.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.13% at 90.213.
