Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Basic Materials and Consumer Services sectors led shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.35%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.45%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 3.77% or 11.93 points to trade at 328.06 at the close. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 2.08% or 3.49 points to end at 171.50 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 1.79% or 1.25 points to 71.15 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM), which fell 2.76% or 2.04 points to trade at 72.00 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) declined 2.41% or 2.71 points to end at 109.74 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was down 1.98% or 5.10 points to 252.97.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Darden Restaurants Inc (NYSE:DRI) which rose 5.02% to 103.85, American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which was up 4.68% to settle at 33.54 and CBRE Group Inc Class A (NYSE:CBRE) which gained 4.28% to close at 41.150.
The worst performers were Philip Morris International Inc (NYSE:PM) which was down 7.65% to 75.17 in late trade, PPL Corporation (NYSE:PPL) which lost 6.64% to settle at 27.97 and Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which was down 5.86% to 294.75 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Biocept Inc (NASDAQ:BIOC) which rose 66.28% to 1.140, Marin Software Inc (NASDAQ:MRIN) which was up 30.07% to settle at 3.720 and Toughbuilt Industries Inc (NASDAQ:TBLT) which gained 22.04% to close at 1.55.
The worst performers were Regulus Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RGLS) which was down 24.09% to 1.040 in late trade, Dova Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:DOVA) which lost 23.64% to settle at 6.88 and Champions Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:CSBR) which was down 23.04% to 7.3500 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1670 to 1401 and 89 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1614 fell and 1039 advanced, while 66 ended unchanged.
Shares in Philip Morris International Inc (NYSE:PM) fell to 5-year lows; down 7.65% or 6.23 to 75.17. Shares in Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM) fell to 3-years lows; losing 2.76% or 2.04 to 72.00. Shares in Regulus Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RGLS) fell to all time lows; down 24.09% or 0.330 to 1.040. Shares in Dova Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:DOVA) fell to all time lows; losing 23.64% or 2.13 to 6.88.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.32% to 25.58 a new 6-months high.
Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.12% or 1.50 to $1253.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 7.21% or 3.62 to hit $46.58 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 5.45% or 3.25 to trade at $56.36 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.15% to 1.1364, while USD/JPY fell 0.27% to 112.53.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.04% at 96.507.
