Investing.com – United States stocks were higher after the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Telecommunications and Consumer Services sectors led shares higher.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.87%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.38%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.34%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 2.28% or 0.83 points to trade at 37.20 at the close. Meanwhile, International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) added 1.85% or 2.93 points to end at 161.44 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) was up 1.58% or 0.44 points to 28.21 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which fell 1.04% or 0.62 points to trade at 58.96 at the close. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) declined 0.80% or 0.90 points to end at 112.03 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) was down 0.03% or 0.03 points to 93.61.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Priceline.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:PCLN) which rose 3.62% to 1149.65, KLA-Tencor Corporation (NASDAQ:KLAC) which was up 3.49% to settle at 72.15 and Raytheon Company (NYSE:RTN) which gained 2.80% to close at 109.81.
The worst performers were Gilead Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:GILD) which was down 14.18% to 93.07 in late trade, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which lost 7.25% to settle at 18.42 and Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which was down 5.02% to 18.16 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were The Wet Seal Inc (NASDAQ:WTSL) which rose 50.96% to 0.079, ChinaNet Online Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:CNET) which was up 45.70% to settle at 1.530 and ContraFect Corp (NASDAQ:CFRX) which gained 40.72% to close at 3.80.
The worst performers were SGOCO Group Ltd (NASDAQ:SGOC) which was down 51.78% to 0.670 in late trade, Altisource Portfolio Solutions SA (NASDAQ:ASPS) which lost 33.61% to settle at 31.56 and Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:HMNY) which was down 21.33% to 1.770 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1768 to 1032 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1688 rose and 1085 declined, while 6 ended unchanged.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 8.19% to 15.14.
Gold for February delivery was down 2.02% or 24.10 to $1171.90 a troy ounce.
Elsewhere in commodities trading, crude oil for delivery in February fell 3.25% or 1.85 to hit $55.27 a barrel, while the February brent oil contract fell 2.14% or 1.31 to trade at $60.06 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.01% to 1.2226, while USD/JPY rose 0.53% to 120.09.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.13% at 89.95.
