The DJI was off 0.23% at 10:15 ET. The S&P 500 shed 0.17%.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite was up 0.03%.
Investors are looking to the minutes of the latest FOMC meeting to gauge the prospects for a further U.S. rate hike this year.
The market odds of a December hike of 25 basis points currently stand at under 50%.
The dollar index consolidated gains above the 96 mark.
Oil was sharply lower after an eight-day rally as Russia reportedly opposes deeper output cuts by major producers.
The American Petroleum Institute's weekly inventories report is due out later in the session.
