The DJI was off 0.11% at 10:15 ET. The S&P 500 shed 0.31%.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite gave up 0.19%.
Trade issues are expected to be to the fore in Trump's meeting with Xi at the end of this week.
Question marks still surround Trump's ability to deliver on his pro-growth agenda.
Investors are also looking to U.S. nonfarm payrolls due for release on Friday.
The FOMC is due to release the minutes of its latest policy meeting on Wednesday.
Thedollar index was firm at the 100.5 mark.
Oil moved higher ahead of API stockpile data.
Banks were lower as longer-dated U.S. Treasury yields fell.
