The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite put on 0.50%.
The ADP reported 263,000 jobs were created in March against an estimate of 187,000.
The ISM non-manufacturing PMI in March fell more than expected.
The FOMC is scheduled to release the minutes of its latest policy meeting.
The focus now turns to Trump's meeting Thursday with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
Thedollar index firmed after the ADP report.
Oil pared gains after the EIA reported a surprise rise in U.S. crude stocks.
(NYSE:Monsanto) was up 1.35% at $115.79 as second-quarter earnings beat earnings.
(NASDAQ:Panera) Bread was up 13.85% at $311.95 as JAB agreed a $7.5 bn bid for the company.
