Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the REITs, Real Estate and Clean Technology sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.58% to hit a new 1-month low.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX:BIR), which rose 3.52% or 0.16 points to trade at 4.70 at the close. Meanwhile, Superior Plus Corp (TSX:SPB) added 3.15% or 0.19 points to end at 6.23 and Orla Mining Ltd (TSX:OLA) was up 3.06% or 0.24 points to 8.08 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Cargojet Inc (TSX:CJT), which fell 4.50% or 4.78 points to trade at 101.42 at the close. Aya Gold & Silver Inc (TSX:AYA) declined 4.17% or 0.49 points to end at 11.26 and NuVista Energy Ltd . (TSX:NVA) was down 3.99% or 0.51 points to 12.26.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 609 to 307 and 110 ended unchanged.

Shares in Cargojet Inc (TSX:CJT) fell to 52-week lows; losing 4.50% or 4.78 to 101.42. Shares in Orla Mining Ltd (TSX:OLA) rose to all time highs; rising 3.06% or 0.24 to 8.08.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 27.20% to 12.44 a new 3-months high.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 1.60% or 42.54 to $2,610.76 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 1.94% or 1.37 to hit $69.21 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 1.04% or 0.76 to trade at $72.63 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.36% to 0.69, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.25% to 0.67.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.36% at 108.14.
