The DJIA was down 0.6% at 10:15 ET, while the S&P 500 was off 0.8%.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite dropped 1%.
The yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury hit fresh lows as investors sought safe-haven assets.
U.S. factory orders fell a seasonally adjusted 1.0% in May, slightly more than forecast.
Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) was down 1% as oil futures fell sharply.
