India stocks lower at close of trade; Nifty 50 down 2.18%

Investing.com – India stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Real Estate, Oil & Gas and Metals sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 lost 2.18% to hit a new 3-months low, while the BSE Sensex 30 index fell 2.09%.

The best performers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Cipla Ltd. (NS:CIPL), which rose 3.91% or 33.60 points to trade at 893.80 at the close. Meanwhile, Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (NS:HLL) added 1.74% or 38.85 points to end at 2269.10 and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd (NS:REDY) was up 0.95% or 42.75 points to 4560.70 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd. (NS:BPCL), which fell 6.42% or 24.70 points to trade at 360.00 at the close. Tata Steel Ltd (NS:TISC) declined 5.22% or 59.15 points to end at 1072.95 and Tata Motors Ltd (NS:TAMO) was down 4.92% or 23.15 points to 447.05.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (BO:HLL) which rose 1.70% to 2268.30, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd (BO:REDY) which was up 0.94% to settle at 4559.35 and Asian Paints Ltd. (BO:ASPN) which lost 0.05% to close at 3240.05.

The worst performers were Tata Steel Ltd (BO:TISC) which was down 5.20% to 1072.95 in late trade, IndusInd Bank Ltd. (BO:INBK) which lost 4.23% to settle at 845.85 and State Bank Of India (BO:SBI) which was down 3.97% to 449.20 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the India National Stock Exchange by 1619 to 198 and 31 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 2621 fell and 728 advanced, while 117 ended unchanged.

The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 16.08% to 18.9650.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.38% or 6.80 to $1798.10 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 3.75% or 2.66 to hit $68.20 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 3.05% or 2.24 to trade at $71.28 a barrel.

USD/INR was down 0.15% to 75.873, while EUR/INR rose 0.08% to 85.4710.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 96.555.
