Investing.com – India stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Metals, Real Estate and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 declined 0.83%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index lost 0.74%.
The best performers of the session on the Nifty 50 were GAIL Ltd (NS:GAIL), which rose 1.14% or 3.85 points to trade at 342.75 at the close. Meanwhile, Bajaj Finance Ltd (NS:BJFN) added 1.17% or 26.30 points to end at 2270.60 and ITC Ltd (NS:ITC) was up 0.59% or 1.55 points to 266.05 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Vedanta Ltd (NS:VDAN), which fell 3.51% or 8.15 points to trade at 224.30 at the close. Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (NS:IOC) declined 3.05% or 5.30 points to end at 168.60 and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (NS:HPCL) was down 3.03% or 9.75 points to 313.00.
The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were ITC Ltd (BO:ITC) which rose 0.76% to 266.15, Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (BO:ONGC) which was up 0.30% to settle at 164.85 and HDFC Bank Ltd (BO:HDBK) which gained 0.20% to close at 2025.40.
The worst performers were Vedanta Ltd (BO:VDAN) which was down 3.55% to 224.05 in late trade, Adani Port and Special Economic Zone Ltd (BO:APSE) which lost 2.00% to settle at 362.65 and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (BO:MAHM) which was down 1.94% to 895.00 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the India National Stock Exchange by 1242 to 367 and 47 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1878 fell and 676 advanced, while 141 ended unchanged.

The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 4.36% to 12.9200.
Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.09% or 1.10 to $1281.20 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 1.34% or 0.88 to hit $64.81 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.60% or 0.45 to trade at $74.89 a barrel.
USD/INR was up 0.37% to 68.295, while EUR/INR fell 0.27% to 78.8678.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.46% at 94.84.
