Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Real Estate, Telecoms and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.31%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT), which rose 38.79% or 0.450 points to trade at 1.610 at the close. Meanwhile, Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. (TO:TRQ) added 13.04% or 0.480 points to end at 4.160 and HudBay Minerals Inc. (TO:HBM) was up 6.09% or 0.38 points to 6.62 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Dominion Diamond Corp (TO:DDC), which fell 4.87% or 0.67 points to trade at 13.09 at the close. Transcontinental Inc (TO:TCLa) declined 4.22% or 0.73 points to end at 16.55 and Alacer Gold Corp (TO:ASR) was down 3.99% or 0.120 points to 2.890.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 759 to 402 and 146 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 11.72% to 18.01 a new 1-month high.
Gold for August delivery was up 0.89% or 11.35 to $1287.25 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.92% or 0.45 to hit $48.62 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.87% or 0.44 to trade at $50.10 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.24% to 0.7807, while CAD/EUR fell 0.65% to 0.6913.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.22% at 94.42.
