Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Materials, Consumer Discretionary and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.03%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG), which rose 6.90% or 0.24 points to trade at 3.72 at the close. Meanwhile, TORC Oil & Gas Ltd. (TO:TOG) added 3.87% or 0.19 points to end at 5.10 and Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc (TO:ATDb) was up 3.74% or 2.25 points to 62.40 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Exchange Income Corporation (TO:EIF), which fell 5.24% or 1.660 points to trade at 30.000 at the close. Semafo Inc . (TO:SMF) declined 3.75% or 0.11 points to end at 2.82 and Ensign Energy Services Inc (TO:ESI) was down 3.58% or 0.25 points to 6.74.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 695 to 427 and 121 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.98% to 14.17.
Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.39% or 4.76 to $1219.46 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.73% or 0.33 to hit $45.37 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.21% or 0.10 to trade at $47.62 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 1.38% to 0.7850, while CAD/EUR rose 1.76% to 0.6872.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 95.53.
