Investing.com – Japan stocks were higher after the close on Friday, as gains in the Rubber, Automobiles & Parts and Precision Instruments sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 rose 1.42% to hit a new 5-year high.
The best performers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Advantest Corp. (TYO:6857), which rose 8.20% or 439.00 points to trade at 5,790.00 at the close. Meanwhile, Tokyo Electron Ltd. (TYO:8035) added 6.03% or 1,605.00 points to end at 28,230.00 and Dainippon Screen Mfg. Co., Ltd. (TYO:7735) was up 5.87% or 755.00 points to 13,625.00 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Sapporo Holdings Ltd. (TYO:2501), which fell 6.06% or 438.00 points to trade at 6,786.00 at the close. Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TYO:9501) declined 2.50% or 20.00 points to end at 780.60 and Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. (TYO:9531) was down 2.43% or 83.00 points to 3,327.00.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 2032 to 1589 and 263 ended unchanged.

The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was down 2.55% to 20.66.
Crude oil for March delivery was unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to $73.95 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Brent oil for delivery in March fell 0.15% or 0.12 to hit $78.98 a barrel, while the February Gold Futures contract rose 0.18% or 3.55 to trade at $2,025.15 a troy ounce.
USD/JPY was up 0.42% to 148.77, while EUR/JPY rose 0.42% to 161.82.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.05% at 103.26.
