Investing.com – Japan stocks were higher after the close on Monday, as gains in the Paper & Pulp, Railway & Bus and Real Estate sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 rose 0.67% to hit a new 5-year high.
The best performers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Alps Electric Co., Ltd. (T:6770), which rose 6.12% or 89.0 points to trade at 1543.0 at the close. Meanwhile, Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (T:4005) added 5.71% or 27.0 points to end at 500.0 and Asahi Kasei Corp. (T:3407) was up 5.24% or 60.0 points to 1204.5 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Kobe Steel, Ltd. (T:5406), which fell 3.34% or 18.0 points to trade at 521.0 at the close. Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (T:7003) declined 3.18% or 14.0 points to end at 426.0 and Kubota Corp. (T:6326) was down 3.16% or 77.0 points to 2360.0.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 2359 to 1200 and 202 ended unchanged.
Shares in Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (T:4005) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 5.71% or 27.0 to 500.0. Shares in Asahi Kasei Corp. (T:3407) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 5.24% or 60.0 to 1204.5.
The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was unchanged 0% to 21.20.
Crude oil for March delivery was up 0.61% or 0.32 to $52.59 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Brent oil for delivery in April rose 0.49% or 0.27 to hit $55.52 a barrel, while the February Gold Futures contract fell 0.27% or 4.95 to trade at $1851.25 a troy ounce.
USD/JPY was down 0.05% to 103.72, while EUR/JPY rose 0.02% to 126.31.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.11% at 90.110.
