Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Healthcare, Materials and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 1.05% to hit a new 52-week low.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd (TO:TVE), which rose 10.87% or 0.200 points to trade at 2.040 at the close. Meanwhile, Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) added 8.50% or 0.17 points to end at 2.17 and Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TO:CPG) was up 6.91% or 0.27 points to 4.18 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG), which fell 15.05% or 2.48 points to trade at 14.00 at the close. Yamana Gold Inc (TO:YRI) declined 9.72% or 0.31 points to end at 2.88 and First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR) was down 8.07% or 0.62 points to 7.06.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 770 to 388 and 101 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.34% to 20.07.
Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.60% or 7.55 to $1246.05 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.57% or 0.73 to hit $47.33 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.34% or 0.19 to trade at $56.45 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.22% to 0.7410, while CAD/EUR fell 0.29% to 0.6517.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.03% at 96.545.
