Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy, IT and Consumer Discretionary sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.72%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were NovaGold Resources Inc (TO:NG), which rose 7.84% or 0.42 points to trade at 5.78 at the close. Meanwhile, Element Fleet Management Corp (TO:EFN) added 6.98% or 0.27 points to end at 4.14 and New Gold Inc (TO:NGD) was up 3.95% or 0.120 points to 3.160 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TO:IVN), which fell 7.33% or 0.220 points to trade at 2.780 at the close. B2Gold Corp (TO:BTO) declined 5.77% or 0.220 points to end at 3.590 and Peyto Exploration&Development Corp (TO:PEY) was down 4.41% or 0.47 points to 10.19.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 754 to 364 and 125 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.62% to 12.69.
Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.34% or 4.40 to $1316.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.34% or 0.21 to hit $62.20 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.17% or 0.11 to trade at $66.10 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.25% to 0.7654, while CAD/EUR fell 0.14% to 0.6202.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.39% at 89.45.
