Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Healthcare, Telecoms and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.42%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Novagold Resources Inc . (TO:NG), which rose 8.25% or 0.41 points to trade at 5.38 at the close. Meanwhile, Norbord Inc (TO:OSB) added 7.23% or 3.18 points to end at 47.19 and Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd . (TO:AEM) was up 4.83% or 2.79 points to 60.57 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc (TO:VRX), which fell 11.55% or 3.20 points to trade at 24.51 at the close. Canopy Growth Corp (TO:WEED) declined 4.83% or 1.770 points to end at 34.870 and Aphria Inc (TO:APH) was down 3.90% or 0.840 points to 20.710.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 573 to 563 and 133 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.14% to 12.82 a new 1-month high.
Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.61% or 21.50 to $1358.20 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 2.20% or 1.42 to hit $65.89 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 1.10% or 0.77 to trade at $70.73 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.70% to 0.8107, while CAD/EUR fell 0.14% to 0.6538.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.92% at 89.05.
