Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Healthcare, IT and Consumer Discretionary sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.40%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG), which rose 5.45% or 0.56 points to trade at 10.83 at the close. Meanwhile, Centerra Gold Inc (TO:CG) added 5.23% or 0.37 points to end at 7.44 and Encana Corporation (TO:ECA) was up 4.82% or 0.82 points to 17.82 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Corus Entertainment Inc (TO:CJRb), which fell 17.92% or 1.12 points to trade at 5.13 at the close. Canopy Growth Corp (TO:WEED) declined 10.10% or 4.150 points to end at 36.930 and Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD) was down 9.22% or 0.13 points to 1.28.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 575 to 531 and 124 ended unchanged.
Shares in MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) rose to 52-week highs; up 5.45% or 0.56 to 10.83. Shares in Corus Entertainment Inc (TO:CJRb) fell to all time lows; down 17.92% or 1.12 to 5.13. Shares in Encana Corporation (TO:ECA) rose to 52-week highs; rising 4.82% or 0.82 to 17.82.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.40% to 14.00 a new 1-month high.
Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.44% or 5.60 to $1254.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 2.62% or 1.85 to hit $72.38 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.46% or 1.11 to trade at $77.25 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.43% to 0.7484, while CAD/EUR rose 0.37% to 0.6478.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.68% at 95.00.
