Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Energy, Mining and Consumer Staples sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.59%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. (TO:PRE), which rose 6.42% or 0.17 points to trade at 2.82 at the close. Meanwhile, Semafo Inc. (TO:SMF) added 5.68% or 0.21 points to end at 3.91 and BRP Inc. (TO:DOO) was up 4.99% or 1.13 points to 23.77 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were RMP Energy Inc. (TO:RMP), which fell 25.98% or 0.990 points to trade at 2.820 at the close. Painted Pony P (TO:PPY) declined 6.94% or 0.48 points to end at 6.44 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd. (TO:BIR) was down 6.34% or 0.44 points to 6.50.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 727 to 642 and 190 ended unchanged.

Shares in RMP Energy Inc. (TO:RMP) fell to 52-week lows; down 25.98% or 0.990 to 2.820.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of options, was down 0.30% to 16.78.

Gold for April delivery was up 1.71% or 19.70 to $1171.00 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude Oil for delivery in May fell 2.42% or 1.13 to hit $45.52 a barrel, while the May Brent Oil contract fell 2.60% or 1.46 to trade at $54.45 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 1.28% to 0.7857, while CAD/EUR rose 0.76% to 0.7381.

The US Dollar Index was up 2.15% at 99.47.
