Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy, Telecommunications and Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.66% to hit a new 1-month low.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Methanex Corporation (TO:MX), which rose 4.18% or 2.86 points to trade at 71.27 at the close. Meanwhile, Descartes Systems Group Inc. (The) (TO:DSG) added 3.35% or 0.64 points to end at 19.73 and RONA Inc. (TO:RON) was up 2.87% or 0.45 points to 16.11 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TO:TXG), which fell 12.04% or 0.130 points to trade at 0.950 at the close. Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. (TO:PRE) declined 9.57% or 0.33 points to end at 3.12 and First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR) was down 9.22% or 0.64 points to 6.30.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 910 to 524 and 178 ended unchanged.
Shares in Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TO:TXG) fell to 52-week lows; losing 12.04% or 0.130 to 0.950. Shares in Descartes Systems Group Inc. (The) (TO:DSG) rose to all time highs; gaining 3.35% or 0.64 to 19.73. Shares in RONA Inc. (TO:RON) rose to 3-year highs; rising 2.87% or 0.45 to 16.11.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of options, was up 3.99% to 17.19.
Gold for April delivery was up 0.15% or 1.70 to $1166.00 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude Oil for delivery in April rose 0.69% or 0.34 to hit $49.95 a barrel, while the April Brent Oil contract fell 2.20% or 1.31 to trade at $58.50 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.19% to 0.7937, while CAD/EUR rose 0.07% to 0.7313.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.12% at 97.62.
