Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy, Mining and Clean Technology sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.45% to hit a new 1-month high.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Alacer Gold Corp. (TO:ASR), which rose 6.52% or 0.18 points to trade at 2.94 at the close. Meanwhile, Yamana Gold Inc. (TO:YRI) added 5.87% or 0.30 points to end at 5.41 and West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. (TO:WFT) was up 4.62% or 3.20 points to 72.45 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG), which fell 8.66% or 1.99 points to trade at 20.98 at the close. Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. (TO:PRE) declined 7.05% or 0.32 points to end at 4.22 and Newalta Corporation (TO:NAL) was down 6.52% or 0.95 points to 13.63.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 619 to 577 and 190 ended unchanged.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of options, was down 2.10% to 18.66.

Gold for April delivery was up 0.68% or 8.60 to $1268.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude Oil for delivery in March fell 8.43% or 4.47 to hit $48.58 a barrel, while the March Brent Oil contract fell 5.82% or 3.37 to trade at $54.54 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 1.25% to 0.7953, while CAD/EUR fell 0.13% to 0.7006.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.84% at 94.55.
