Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Telecoms and Consumer Staples sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.63%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Precision Drilling Corporation (TO:PD), which rose 12.57% or 0.47 points to trade at 4.17 at the close. Meanwhile, Crew Energy Inc (TO:CR) added 8.68% or 0.33 points to end at 4.13 and Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TO:CPG) was up 8.62% or 0.78 points to 9.83 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were TransAlta Renewables Inc. (TO:RNW), which fell 5.65% or 0.87 points to trade at 14.52 at the close. Lucara Diamond Corp (TO:LUC) declined 4.83% or 0.140 points to end at 2.760 and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TO:IVN) was down 2.94% or 0.140 points to 4.630.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 714 to 390 and 135 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.91% to 12.81.
Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.10% or 1.30 to $1240.60 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.55% or 0.72 to hit $47.12 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.74% or 0.85 to trade at $49.69 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.27% to 0.7940, while CAD/EUR rose 0.61% to 0.6896.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.18% at 94.62.
