Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the IT, Materials and Consumer Discretionary sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.07% to hit a new all time high.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP), which rose 8.54% or 7.50 points to trade at 95.32 at the close. Meanwhile, NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX:NG) added 7.27% or 0.42 points to end at 6.20 and Canfor Corporation (TSX:CFP) was up 5.62% or 0.79 points to 14.85 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Capstone Mining Corp (TSX:CS), which fell 4.92% or 0.51 points to trade at 9.86 at the close. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM) declined 3.48% or 0.64 points to end at 17.73 and Topaz Energy Corp (TSX:TPZ) was down 2.71% or 0.69 points to 24.79.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 646 to 307 and 96 ended unchanged.
Shares in NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX:NG) rose to 52-week highs; up 7.27% or 0.42 to 6.20.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.82% to 8.43.
Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.80% or 43.60 to $2,472.50 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.22% or 0.99 to hit $79.85 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.20% or 1.02 to trade at $83.83 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.08% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.04% to 0.67.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.03% at 103.92.
