Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Mining, Materials and Consumer Discretionary sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.28%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG), which rose 8.58% or 0.95 points to trade at 12.02 at the close. Meanwhile, IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG) added 7.35% or 0.350 points to end at 5.110 and Semafo Inc . (TO:SMF) was up 7.08% or 0.41 points to 6.20 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Western Forest Products Inc (TO:WEF), which fell 3.15% or 0.070 points to trade at 2.150 at the close. Le Groupe Jean Coutu PJC Inc (TO:PJCa) declined 2.44% or 0.48 points to end at 19.16 and CCL Industries Inc (TO:CCLb) was down 2.03% or 4.58 points to 220.94.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 592 to 565 and 144 ended unchanged.
Shares in Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG) rose to 3-years highs; up 8.58% or 0.95 to 12.02. Shares in Semafo Inc. (TO:SMF) rose to 3-years highs; up 7.08% or 0.41 to 6.20.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 7.10% to 17.28.
Gold for August delivery was up 0.64% or 8.30 to $1296.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 2.00% or 0.97 to hit $47.52 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 2.41% or 1.20 to trade at $48.63 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.37% to 0.7739, while CAD/EUR fell 0.85% to 0.6874.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.39% at 94.66.
