Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, IT and Financials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.04% to hit a new 3-months high.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Cogeco Communications Inc (TO:CCA), which rose 8.94% or 6.71 points to trade at 81.76 at the close. Meanwhile, TransAlta Corp (TO:TA) added 6.70% or 0.52 points to end at 8.28 and Centerra Gold Inc (TO:CG) was up 4.21% or 0.28 points to 6.93 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. (TO:TRQ), which fell 13.67% or 0.380 points to trade at 2.400 at the close. Laurentian Bank Of Canada (TO:LB) declined 9.81% or 4.52 points to end at 41.54 and Uni-Select Inc. (TO:UNS) was down 7.20% or 0.96 points to 12.37.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 561 to 541 and 108 ended unchanged.
Shares in Cogeco Communications Inc (TO:CCA) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 8.94% or 6.71 to 81.76. Shares in TransAlta Corp (TO:TA) rose to 52-week highs; up 6.70% or 0.52 to 8.28. Shares in Uni-Select Inc. (TO:UNS) fell to 5-year lows; losing 7.20% or 0.96 to 12.37.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.01% to 13.16 a new 3-months low.
Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.52% or 6.90 to $1321.60 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 2.70% or 1.50 to hit $57.00 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $66.53 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.08% to 0.7604, while CAD/EUR fell 0.02% to 0.6682.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.18% at 96.037.
