  • Shipments were 8M in the holiday season, up 32% on 4Q16.

  • Data center: On Saturday, reports said that Apple plans to open its first China data center in 2020. Now it looks like Apple will have two centers operable by that date.
  • The official Xinhua news agency, citing local government, says the second center will be built in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the north.
  • Shazam investigation: The European Commission announces plans to assess Apple’s acquisition of Shazam.
  • Australia, France, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Spain, and Sweden joined together to request the investigation.
  • Key quote: “Apple's proposed acquisition of Shazam does not meet the turnover thresholds set by the EU Merger Regulation for mergers that must be notified to the European Commission because they have an EU dimension. It was notified by Apple for regulatory clearance in Austria, where the transaction meets the national merger notification threshold."
