A Milestone Achievement
A listing on Google Play Store is a major achievement for most web3 games and apps. The online app store is home to over 2 million apps and games and caters to billions of users around the world.
Axie Infinity has planned a soft launch in the Malaysian Play Store first. The decision will allow developers to experiment, test, and improve the game while gathering essential feedback from user experiences.
As part of its ongoing effort to expose itself to other markets to gather data, Axie has shared it will be launching Origins in smaller countries that are similar in demographic and play archetypes of regions such as North and South America, Europe, and East Asia.
Axie Infinity plans to make Origins better in each iteration and launch. The game studio clarified that the early Play Store versions of the app would have limited features, and players will not be able to earn tokens in compliance with Play Store policies.
Social media users later shared their concerns about the upcoming Play Store launch as the game will be stripped of its most important element, the play-to-earn feature.
The game ecosystem has reassured its users that it remains committed to its vision of a player-owner digital nation and will continue to work with Google Play Store to unlock those features.
On the Flipside
- The South Korean government has blocked the release of play-to-earn (P2E) games on the Google Play Store and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store. The government has requested the removal of all existing web3 games from the respective app stores.
- The Google Play Store iteration of the game will provide a different experience compared to the APK. The game will not support elements of web3, especially the play-to-earn mechanics.
