Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Friday, as gains in the Materials, Consumer Staples and Financials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.30%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. (TO:PRE), which rose 5.36% or 0.27 points to trade at 5.31 at the close. Meanwhile, Alamos Gold Inc. (TO:AGI) added 3.08% or 0.22 points to end at 7.36 and Interfor Corp (TO:IFP) was up 2.83% or 0.59 points to 21.41 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Bonterra Energy Corp (TO:BNE), which fell 3.46% or 1.10 points to trade at 30.69 at the close. Bellatrix Exploration Ltd (TO:BXE) declined 3.39% or 0.10 points to end at 2.85 and Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT) was down 3.27% or 0.07 points to 2.07.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 635 to 615 and 173 ended unchanged.
Shares in Bonterra Energy Corp (TO:BNE) fell to 5-year lows; down 3.46% or 1.10 to 30.69.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.76% to 13.23.
Gold for August delivery was up 0.37% or 4.30 to $1167.80 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 2.48% or 1.41 to hit $55.52 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 2.44% or 1.51 to trade at $60.55 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.15% to 0.7960, while CAD/EUR fell 0.40% to 0.7163.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.10% at 96.38.
