S&P 500 Futures: #ES Gap And Fade
Chart courtesy of Stewart Solaka @Chicagostock – $ES_F Trapped shorts from prior session 2924 10/4 high.
During Monday nights Globex session, the S&P 500 futures (ESM19:CME) printed a high of 2921.25, a low of 2910.00, and opened Tuesday’s regular trading hours at 2919.25.
Staying true to form, the ES sold off after the 8:30 CT bell, and by 10:00 had printed a RTH low at 2911.25. From there, the futures traded sideways in a 4 handle range for the rest of the morning, and into the afternoon.
Just after 1:00 CT the ES broke to make a new low by 1 tick at 2909.75, then turned to make another slow run up to the top of the range at 2914.75. After that, and I’m still not sure what happened, it was either news or a fat finger, but the futures nose dived down 2904.50 right at 2:30, then quickly recovered going into the close.
When the 2:45 cash imbalance reveal showed $68M to sell the ES was trading at 2907.50, then went on to print 2911.75 on the 3:00 cash close, and 2911.50 on the 3:15 futures close.
In the end, the overall tone of the ES was mixed. In terms of the days overall trade, total volume was higher, with 1.1 million futures contracts traded.
