WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House was temporarily locked down on Tuesday with media citing an air space violation in the area that was not believed to be hostile.
Nearby roads were closed and no one was allowed into the compound, and the U.S. Capitol was also temporarily locked down, according to media reports. They were later reopened.
Representatives for the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the Capitol Police did immediately respond to requests for comment.
Law enforcement officials told NBC News that an airspace violation was reported in Washington and fighter jets were scrambled. ABC News' Washington affiliate reported that the airplane that entered restricted airspace around the nation's capital was not believed to be hostile.
Security lockdowns are not uncommon around the White House. The Secret Service had no immediate comment.
