NEW YORK, Oct 5 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks ended sharply higher on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 closing at its highest level since mid-May on growing conviction that central banks will do even more to boost struggling economies worldwide.
Based on the latest available data, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 193.45 points, or 1.80 percent, to end unofficially at 10,944.72. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 23.72 points, or 2.09 percent, to finish unofficially at 1,160.75. The Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 55.31 points, or 2.36 percent, to close unofficially at 2,399.83. (Reporting by Caroline Valetkevitch; Editing by Jan Paschal)
