NEW YORK, Sept 20 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks kept gains on Monday after a report showed U.S. homebuilder sentiment unexpectedly held steady in September.
The S&P 500 reached its highest since mid May, topping a key technical level closely followed by analysts.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 74.25 points, or 0.70 percent, to 10,682.10. The Standard & Poor's 500 gained 8.28 points, or 0.74 percent, to 1,133.87. The Nasdaq Composite added 19.25 points, or 0.83 percent, to 2,334.86.
The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index was unchanged at 13, matching the previous month's level, which was the lowest since March 2009.
