NEW YORK, Sept 20 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks extended gains on Monday, with the Nasdaq Composite jumping more than 1 percent and the S&P 500 at a four-month high and topping a key technical level.
The S&P 500 reached its highest since mid-May at 1,131, a level closely followed by analysts. Moving above that point in relatively strong volume is seen by chartists as a harbinger of future gains.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 90.59 points, or 0.85 percent, to 10,698.44. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 9.55 points, or 0.85 percent, to 1,135.14. The Nasdaq Composite added 25.00 points, or 1.08 percent, to 2,340.61.
