Investing.com -- Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) announced on Tuesday afternoon that Quip chief executive officer Bret Taylor, formerly chief technology officer at Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB), will join the company's Board of Directors.
Taylor, who joined Facebook as its head of platform in 2009, founded Quip three years later, alongside Kevin Gibbs, the creator of Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL)'s App Engine. Quip is a collaborative productivity software suite, which allows users to edit spreadsheets and other business documents on a mobile platform. Taylor left Facebook in 2012. Last October, CEO Jack Dorsey had the interim tag lifted three months after his predecessor Dick Costolo announced that he was resigning from the position.
"Excited to join @twitter's board," Taylor said on his Twitter account on Tuesday. "Twitter is one of the most important services in the world, and I’m thrilled to be able to work with @jack."
Taylor, who received a bachelor's degree and master's degree from Stanford University in computer science, also served as the co-creator of Google Maps and Google Maps API in 2005. Two years later, Taylor left Google to work at Benchmark Capital, a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm. At Benchmark, Taylor designed and developed FriendFeed along with Jim Norris, another former Google employee.
Since Dorsey became Twitter's permanent CEO 10 months ago, shares in the social networking site have tumbled approximately 40%.
"Bret brings world class experience, insight, & thoughtfulness around building social services," Dorsey wrote on his Twitter account.
Shares in Twitter inched up 0.01 or 0.06% to 17.15 in after-hours trading.
